Banas Dairy’s Cooperative Farming Model for High-Quality Seed Potatoes.

Join WhatsApp Group of Indian Potato

Banas Dairy, Asia’s largest milk producer cooperative based in Banaskantha, Gujarat, is making a transformative stride beyond dairy by advancing the cooperative model to potato seed production. In line with Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of “Sahkar Se Samriddhi” (Prosperity through Cooperation) and under the guidance of Union Home & Cooperation Minister, Banas Dairy has signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bharatiya Beej Sahakari Samiti Ltd. (BBSSL) to shape a cooperative framework for high-quality potato seed production and cultivation. This initiative champions scientific farming methods, disease-free seed availability, contract farming, and assured market linkages to empower farmers and revitalize rural economies across the region.

Cooperative Legacy and Expansion

Banas Dairy’s cooperative success story dates back to 1966 when it began with the vision of uplifting village farmers through collective effort. Founded formally in 1969 by Galbabhai Nanjibhai Patel, it has grown to become a beacon of rural prosperity through dairy farming. Expanding this cooperative ethos to potato seed production represents a significant leap in diversification, addressing challenges like quality seed availability, input costs, and market access faced by potato farmers in the Banaskantha region — famously known as the “Potato Bowl of India.” Banaskantha contributes nearly half of Gujarat’s potato production, with 18.70 lakh tonnes produced in the 2024-25 season over 61,016 hectares, achieving high productivity of 30.65 tonnes per hectare.

Partnership Goals and Technology Integration

The MoU between Banas Dairy and BBSSL aims to establish a full value chain for seed potato production using cutting-edge technology. Banas Dairy will share its advanced tissue culture and aeroponic technology—a soilless method where plant roots are misted with nutrient-rich solutions—to ensure disease-free, high-quality seed potatoes reach small and marginal farmers. This system reduces the risks of diseases that compromise yields and enhances seed viability. The partnership also includes farmer training for scientific cultivation techniques, contract farming models to secure production and incomes, and organized market linkages ensuring fair prices and reducing middlemen exploitation.

Benefits for Farmers and Rural Economy

By adopting cooperative principles in potato seed production, Banas Dairy and BBSSL bring multiple benefits to farmers:

  • Access to scientifically produced, disease-free seed potatoes, enhancing crop yields and quality.

  • Training and ongoing support to adopt modern cultivation practices tailored for regional conditions.

  • Assured market linkages and contract farming options, ensuring stable income and reducing market risks.

  • Lower input and production costs due to collective bargaining and resource pooling.

  • Economic upliftment of farmers through increased income and sustainability of farm enterprises.

This initiative complements Banas Dairy’s mission to enhance farmers’ income and reduce costs, capturing the true essence of “Harvesting Happiness” beyond dairy alone.

Strategic Importance for Banaskantha and Beyond

Banaskantha’s potato production prominence and Banas Dairy’s strong cooperative network position this alliance as a model to replicate in other regions. Banas Dairy already processes large quantities of potatoes, including ventures into processed potato products like French fries, catering to domestic and international markets. This expansion into seed potato cooperatives locks the entire potato value chain under farmer-centric cooperative management, boosting self-reliance and rural prosperity.

Leadership Driving Change

The agreement, witnessed by Secretary of Ministry of Cooperation Shri Ashish Bhutani and led by Banas Dairy Chairman Shri Shankar Chaudhary and Managing Director Shri Sangram, exemplifies visionary leadership harnessing cooperative strength for sustainable agricultural growth. It demonstrates government initiatives aligning with cooperative societies for inclusive development, embodying the principles embedded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji’s and Minister Amit Shah Ji’s vision for “Sahkar Se Samriddhi”.

This cooperative effort between Banas Dairy and Bharatiya Beej Sahakari Samiti marks a milestone in Indian agricultural cooperatives, promising a better, more prosperous future for potato farmers through science, solidarity, and sustainable practices. It firmly establishes cooperative farming and seed production as powerful tools for rural renaissance and farmer empowerment in Gujarat and beyond.
