In a strategic move to stabilize domestic markets, Bangladesh is actively seeking alternative sources for potato imports, traditionally dominated by Indian supplies, amid growing diplomatic tensions between the two nations.
The decision emerged from a crucial meeting held at the commerce ministry office in Dhaka on 5th December 2024, where Commerce Secretary Mohammad Salim Uddin met with key stakeholders to discuss import diversification strategies and market monitoring mechanisms.
The timing of this policy shift is particularly significant, coming in the wake of strained bilateral relations following the August 5 political transition. The move represents Bangladesh’s efforts to reduce its dependency on Indian agricultural imports and ensure price stability of essential kitchen staples.
Import data reveals Bangladesh’s substantial reliance on potatoes, with imports reaching 155,568 tonnes in the previous fiscal year. The current fiscal year’s first five months alone saw 56,763 tonnes of potatoes being imported from India.
