In the heart of Haryana lies a remarkable success story – the village of Bechirag, which has emerged as a leading producer of high-quality potato seeds over the past two decades. This agricultural achievement centers around a 32-acre technology demonstration facility operated by the Haryana Horticulture Department.
State-of-the-Art Technology Center
The center, situated on Kala Amb Road from Ugra Khedi on Sanauli Road, has been collaborating with the Potato Technology Center Shamgarh, Karnal to produce premium early-variety potato seeds using tissue culture techniques. The facility specializes in three main potato varieties: Kufri Pukhraj, Kufri Mohan, and Kufri Neelkanth.
High-Demand Varieties
Among these varieties, Kufri Pukhraj and Kufri Mohan have gained particular popularity in the Panipat region. These early-maturing varieties reach harvest readiness in just 65-70 days when planted in late September, allowing farmers to harvest their crop by December. The Neelkanth variety, with an 80-day maturation period, offers another profitable option for farmers.
Economic Benefits and Government Support
The strategic timing of these potato varieties enables farmers to fetch premium prices and subsequently plant early seasonal crops like muskmelon, watermelon, and cucumber. To encourage potato seed production, the government provides substantial support through the IHD scheme, offering farmers a subsidy of ₹12,000 per acre for up to 12.5 acres.
Modern Distribution System
The center has implemented a streamlined process for seed distribution. Farmers can apply online through the portal in February and secure their seed requirements after making online payments. The facility offers flexible collection options – farmers can either collect seeds in March or utilize the center’s cold storage facility to preserve them until the September-October planting season.
Under the expert guidance of subject matter specialists Sandeep Nagar and Mahabir Sharma, the center continues to play a crucial role in advancing potato cultivation in the region, making Bechirag village a symbol of agricultural innovation and success in Haryana.
