Located in the picturesque state of Meghalaya in northeastern India, Tura serves as a hub for agricultural education and sustainable farming practices. The College of Community Science, nestled within the serene landscapes of Meghalaya, plays a pivotal role in nurturing the next generation of agriculturists and fostering a culture of sustainable farming in the region.
On May 30, 2024, the College of Community Science, Central Agricultural University (Indian Council of Agricultural Research) in Tura, Meghalaya, marked the International Day of Potato with fervour and dedication. The event was not only a tribute to the humble potato but also a testament to the importance of supporting small-scale and family farming practices, especially among rural farmers, including women.
The commemoration of the International Day of Potato at CCS Tura was a poignant reminder of the crucial role that potatoes play in addressing hunger, malnutrition, and poverty. With a strong emphasis on promoting food security and advocating for the conservation and sustainable utilization of biodiversity, the event underscored the significance of sustainable agricultural practices in today’s world.
Under the leadership of Dr. Jyoti V. Vastrad, Dean of CCS, Tura, and the organizational prowess of Dr. Priyadarshani P. Mohapatra, Assistant Professor of Horticulture, the celebration brought together a diverse group of 55 participants. The attendees, comprising farmers, students, faculty members, and non-teaching staff of CCS, collectively engaged in discussions and activities aimed at highlighting the importance of potato cultivation in the agricultural landscape.
A notable aspect of the event was the gesture of providing farmers with vegetable seeds and vermicompost, enriching their agricultural practices and fostering sustainable farming methods. This initiative not only aimed to enhance the productivity of rural farmers but also sought to empower them with resources necessary for sustainable and efficient cultivation techniques.
As the echoes of the International Day of Potato celebration fade, the spirit of sustainable agriculture and community empowerment resonates strongly at CCS Tura. The event not only served as a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration but also set the stage for continued support for small-scale farmers and the promotion of sustainable farming practices in the vibrant agricultural tapestry of Meghalaya.
