To support the potato cultivation in the high-altitude region of Lahaul-Spiti, the Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI) is actively supporting local farmers in enhancing potato seed production. The initiative aims to improve yield, soil health, and ultimately, farmer income through the adoption of best practices and access to quality inputs.
Recognizing the unique potential of Lahaul-Spiti’s climate for producing high-quality potato seeds, CPRI is working closely with farmers to implement effective strategies. A key focus of this effort is promoting the importance of crop rotation in potato cultivation. By rotating crops, farmers can significantly improve soil fertility, break pest and disease cycles, and ensure long-term sustainability of their farms.
As part of this support, CPRI recently organized a Kisan Mela (Farmers’ Fair) in Udaipur, Lahaul-Spiti, in collaboration with the Krishi Vikas Kendra. The event served as a platform to educate farmers on advanced farming techniques and distribute essential resources. A major highlight was the distribution of 100 quintals of high-quality Kufri Chandramukhi variety potato seeds to the attending farmers. This popular variety is known for its good yield and suitability for various culinary uses. In addition to seeds, 100 power sprayers were also provided, equipping farmers with necessary tools for better crop management.
The initiative goes beyond just providing inputs. CPRI is also facilitating connections between farmers and potato processing companies. By producing certified, high-quality seeds, farmers will be in a strong position to sell their produce directly to these companies, thereby securing better prices and increasing their profitability. Furthermore, discussions are underway to explore opportunities for contract farming, which would provide farmers with assured markets and technical support from companies.
The Kisan Mela saw active participation from CPRI officials and agricultural experts. Dr. Brijesh Singh, Director of CPRI, presided over the event and emphasized the critical role of crop rotation in sustainable potato farming. Dr. Alok Kumar, Head of CPRI’s Social Science Department, elaborated on the benefits farmers would reap from adopting the recommended practices and utilizing the distributed resources. Other officials, including Dr. Vinod Kumar, Chairman of the Crop Improvement Division, Technical Officer Rakesh Kumar, Scientist Dr. Radhika Negi, Superintendent Satish Kumar Sharma, and Secretary Shubhanshu Kapur, were also present, interacting with farmers and addressing their queries.
This concerted effort by CPRI to empower farmers in Lahaul-Spiti with knowledge, quality seeds, and market linkages is expected to significantly boost the region’s potato seed production. By focusing on sustainable practices and economic opportunities, the initiative aims to bring greater prosperity to the farming communities in this vital agricultural area. The successful conduct of the Kisan Mela and the positive reception from farmers indicate a promising future for potato cultivation in Lahaul-Spiti.
