In an initiative, the ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI) has announced plans to develop Junga, a scenic village 25 kilometers from Shimla, into a specialized potato seed production hub.
The institute will soon formalize this transformation through a Memorandum of Understanding with local farmers, marking a pioneering step in addressing the region’s persistent potato seed shortage.
During a recent workshop and equipment distribution program in Junga, local farmers voiced strong support for the initiative. The project aims to ensure a sustainable supply of quality potato seeds not only for Junga but also for neighboring panchayats.
“We will provide breeder seeds to Junga farmers in the upcoming season,” said Dr. Brijesh Singh, Director of CPRI, Shimla. “This will enable farmers to become self-sufficient in seed production and even support other farmers in the region.” He emphasized that all farming activities would be conducted under expert CPRI supervision.
The institute’s commitment to agricultural development extends beyond Junga. Dr. Singh revealed that CPRI officials will conduct a similar workshop in Pujarli village on December 18, where farming equipment will be distributed to tribal and Scheduled Caste farmers.
This initiative represents a significant step forward in strengthening local agricultural infrastructure and supporting farming communities in Himachal Pradesh’s potato-growing regions.
