A young farmer from Firozabad has earned top honors at Lucknow’s prestigious vegetable exhibition, demonstrating how soil health and other scientific factorsmethods can transform potato farming. At the forefront of this is Monendra Kumar, a young farmer from Rasidpur Kanaita, District Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh whose approach to potato farming has earned him the first prize in the white variety category. Kumar, who began his farming journey in 2015 alongside his younger brother Shivam, has transformed conventional farming practices through his scientific approach at their Monu Farm.
What sets Monendra’s farming methodology apart is his meticulous attention to soil health and cultivation practices. “Unlike traditional approaches where farmers typically focus only on more fertilizers, we prioritize comprehensive soil testing and treatment,” explains Monendra. This scientific approach has not only boosted productivity but has also significantly enhanced the quality, size, and appearance of the potatoes.
Operating across 35 acres, Monu Farm specializes in cultivating multiple potato varieties including Kufri Bhar, Kufri Lavkar, Kufri Mohan, and Kufri Khyati. The farm’s success lies in its sustainable farming practices, particularly in soil management. Monendra emphasizes minimal use of DAP (Diammonium Phosphate), instead promoting organic fertilizers and maintaining regular soil health monitoring.
Notably, Firozabad district holds the second place in potato production in Uttar Pradesh with a production of 20.8 lac tonnes of potatoes in 2022-23 (Source: Department of Horticulture and Food Processing) The district ranks second after Agra.
The farm’s produce has gained substantial market recognition, with distribution networks extending beyond local markets to various cities in Madhya Pradesh. This interstate demand demonstrates the growing reputation of Firozabad’s agricultural products, particularly its premium quality potatoes.
