A notable advantage is the low aphid population, which further contributes to the production of inherently disease-resistant potatoes, cementing Himachal Pradesh’s reputation as a prime location for seed potato production.

According to a senior agriculture expert in Shimla, one key characteristic is their high dry matter content, which can reach up to 20 per cent. This is a vital factor, particularly for manufacturers, as it is crucial for producing high-quality potato chips. Furthermore, the timing of the potato harvest in Himachal Pradesh offers a significant advantage. The cultivation practices are predominantly managed by small and marginal farmers, with around 80 per cent of the cultivated area relying on rainfed agriculture. This reliance on natural rainfall highlights the vulnerability of these farmers to climatic variations and market fluctuations, making government support even more critical.
