In Indian households, potatoes are a fundamental ingredient, essential in various dishes. While they are a versatile and ubiquitous vegetable, concerns arise regarding potential weight gain and elevated sugar levels due to their high carbohydrate content. The question of whether incorporating potatoes into daily diets is detrimental is being addressed by Dr. Paras Agarwal, a Senior Diabetologist at Max Healthcare Gurgaon.
Dr. Agarwal highlights that 100 grams of potatoes consist of 77% water, 1.9 grams of protein, 20.1 grams of carbohydrates, 0.9 grams of sugar, 1.8 grams of fiber, and 0.1 grams of fat. Additionally, potatoes contain essential nutrients like potassium, vitamin B6, vitamin C, and folate, making them a well-rounded dietary option.
Emphasizing the importance of moderation, Dr. Agarwal notes that the impact of potatoes on health varies based on consumption habits. While excessive consumption, especially in fried form, can lead to adverse effects, consuming limited quantities poses no harm to a healthy individual.
Moreover, Dr. Agarwal warns that excessive potato intake can contribute to weight gain due to their high-calorie content. Deep-fried potatoes, in particular, can elevate levels of unhealthy fats. Therefore, he advises individuals to limit their potato intake to 25-50 grams per day, preferably opting for non-deep-fried preparations to maintain a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.
