On February 1, 2025, the bustling town of Shopian witnessed a significant initiative to boost agricultural productivity and empower local farmers. The Division of Vegetable Science at SKUAST-Kashmir, in collaboration with KVK Shopian, organised an enlightening awareness and seed distribution programme. This event, focusing on potato cultivation, was held under the aegis of the Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) of the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Potato.
The programme aimed to promote scientific potato seed production techniques among local farmers, ensuring better yields and quality. Dr. Zaffar Afroz Badri, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK Shopian, commenced the event with a warm welcome address. He emphasised the myriad opportunities available in the potato production sector and the importance of adopting advanced cultivation methods. Approximately 40 tribal farmers participated, eager to learn and implement the new practices.
Dr. Syed Faheema Mushtaq, the Principal Investigator of the project, conducted detailed training sessions. She shared valuable insights on the scientific methods of potato seed production, equipping the farmers with practical knowledge to enhance their yield. It was not just a theoretical session; farmers received hands-on training, which is crucial for practical application in fields.
In addition to the training, 12.5 quintals of quality potato seed, along with other agricultural inputs, were distributed among the beneficiaries. This generous distribution was designed to support and encourage sustainable potato farming practices in the region, potentially transforming the agricultural landscape of Shopian.
The impact of this programme reflects a larger trend in Jammu and Kashmir, where various governmental and non-governmental bodies are actively working to promote sustainable development and agrarian prosperity. The emphasis on localised, scientific approaches to farming aligns with broader efforts across the region to adapt to modern agricultural practices, ensuring food security and economic stability for farming communities.
Elsewhere in Jammu and Kashmir, local government and organisations are undertaking numerous initiatives to enhance the quality of life and infrastructure. The Union Budget 2025 has been a hot topic, with varied reactions from political leaders and the public alike. While MP Gulam Ali hailed the budget as public-friendly and a masterstroke by PM Modi, others like the DPAP leader Peer Bilal expressed strong disappointment, showcasing the diverse political landscape of the region.
Moreover, environmental consciousness is on the rise, with World Wetlands Day being observed through various programs to highlight the importance of wetlands in ecological balance. Similarly, youth engagement in environmental protection was seen when NCC cadets planted 960 saplings at the Central University of Jammu campus.
Cultural and educational activities also featured prominently, reflecting the vibrant life of Jammu and Kashmir. The Supertech Kids Valley Playway School celebrated its 14th Annual Day with grandeur, and SANKALP: HEW Kishtwar conducted an awareness programme on menstrual hygiene for tribal women.
This tapestry of events portrays a region actively engaging in progressive initiatives, from agricultural innovations to environmental and educational advancements. Each initiative, whether it’s a seed distribution programme or a cleanliness drive, contributes to the overarching goal of fostering a prosperous and sustainable future for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
