The Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare released the Third Advance Estimates for Horticulture Crops for the 2024-25 crop year (July-June) on November 25, 2025, revealing a steady growth trajectory for India’s potato sector. According to the latest estimates, India’s potato production has been pegged at 58.108 million tonnes, marking a 1.85% increase from the previous year’s 57.053 million tonnes. This growth exemplifies the country’s position as the world’s second-largest potato producer after China.
Production Figures and Year-on-Year Comparison
The third advance estimates present a comprehensive picture of the potato sector’s performance during 2024-25. While the production estimate of 58.1 million tonnes shows moderate growth from the previous year, it represents a downward revision from the second advance estimates of 60.175 million tonnes released earlier. This adjustment of approximately 2 million tonnes reflects more accurate data compilation from various states and union territories.
The overall horticulture production in 2024-25 has been estimated at 369.05 million tonnes, up from 354.74 million tonnes in 2023-24, representing a 4% increase year-on-year. Potatoes contributed significantly to this growth as part of the vegetable sector, which recorded production of 215.68 million tonnes, showing a 4.09% increase from the previous year’s 207.21 million tonnes.
Factors Driving Growth
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan attributed the positive performance to several factors including the dedication of farmers, contributions of agricultural scientists, and farmer-friendly policies implemented by the Central government. The Minister highlighted that advancements in modern farming tools, high-quality seed production, and improved market infrastructure have contributed to enhanced productivity across the horticulture sector.
The area under horticulture crops expanded to 29.488 million hectares in 2024-25, up from 29.08 million hectares in the previous year. This expansion in cultivated area, combined with improved agricultural practices and favourable weather conditions, supported the overall production increase.
Expansion in Potaotes
A notable trend in India’s potato sector is the growing emphasis on processed potato production. Gujarat has emerged as India’s leading producer of processed potatoes, surpassing traditional leaders like Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.
India’s processed potato products have gained significant traction in international markets, particularly Southeast Asia. Exports of dehydrated potato granules and pellets surged from USD 11.4 million in 2021-22 to USD 63.3 million in 2024-25, making them India’s fastest-growing processed food export category. Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, and Thailand account for nearly 80% of India’s total exports.
Outlook
The Third Advance Estimates for 2024-25 reflect India’s steady progress in potato production while highlighting the need for continued investment in processing infrastructure, cold chain facilities, and market linkages. With domestic consumption patterns evolving and export opportunities expanding, particularly in processed potato products, India’s potato sector is well-positioned for sustained growth in the coming years
