India’s potato sector stands as a major player in both the domestic and global food economy. In 2023, India produced an impressive 60.1 million tonnes of potatoes, making it the second-largest potato producer worldwide. While most of this output satisfies India’s massive domestic appetite, the country is quickly advancing as an influential exporter of fresh (ware) potatoes (HS 070190), especially to key Asian markets. Among these, Indonesia has rapidly become one of the most attractive destinations for Indian potato exports, driven by a surge in local demand and competitive pricing from Indian suppliers.

Indonesia’s Surging Potato Import Market

Indonesia’s fresh potato imports have witnessed exponential growth, fueled by evolving food consumption habits, the boom in quick-service restaurants, and the expansion of the food processing industry. Five years ago, Indonesia’s annual potato imports stood at 38,805 tonnes. By June 2025, import volumes had reached 102,119 tonnes—a 17.6% increase from the prior year and the first time that imports crossed the 100,000-tonne threshold. The momentum continued, touching 108,156 tonnes in August 2025 (up 46.9% year-on-year), and maintaining 108,120 tonnes by September 2025 (up 54.1% year-on-year).

This accelerating market presents a golden opportunity for international potato exporters, with India emerging as a consistent and favored supplier due to its value proposition and ability to meet rising volumes.

India: Leading Potato Exporter to Indonesia

India has established itself as the dominant potato exporter to Indonesia, consistently holding a 37–50% share of the Indonesian import market in recent years.

  • In 2024, India exported 41,073 tonnes of fresh potatoes to Indonesia.

  • Shipments rose to 43,512 tonnes for the year ending September 2025.

  • In just three years, Indian potato exports to Indonesia have soared 64%, up from 25,060 tonnes in 2021/22, to 32,210 tonnes in 2022/23, and 41,125 tonnes in 2023/24.

  • In the year ending January 2025, exports surged by 48.4% year-on-year.

With global fresh potato exports from India reaching 513,537 tonnes in 2024, Indonesia stands out as a leading and rapidly growing partner.

Key Advantages Boosting India’s Export Success

Large-Scale Production
India’s annual potato production exceeding 60 million tonnes provides a robust foundation for sustained export growth and fulfillment of consistent international demand.

Seasonal Timing
India harvests its main potato crop from January to March, perfectly meeting Indonesia’s requirements during the Northern Hemisphere’s supply gap—a critical timing advantage.

Superior Price Competitiveness
Indian potatoes enjoy a decisive cost edge in Indonesia. Average import prices over the year ending June 2025 were about ₹28,800 per tonne—well below Chinese potatoes at ₹37,200/tonne and German potatoes at ₹42,000/tonne. This price differential ensures India remains the most attractive supplier for Indonesian importers seeking both value and reliability.

Logistical and Policy Support
Government agencies like APEDA, robust cold chain development, and efficient port operations further enhance India’s reputation as a high-quality, dependable agricultural exporter to Southeast Asia.

Strategic Partnerships and Market Outlook

Strong India–Indonesia collaboration in the potato trade drives mutual benefits: Indonesia secures a steady supply of affordable fresh potatoes for food retail and processing, while Indian growers tap into a flourishing Southeast Asian market. As Indonesia’s fast-food and snack industries grow and logistics infrastructure improves, potato import demand is forecast to maintain an upward trajectory.

India’s Potato Export Future in Southeast Asia

Fresh potato exports from India to Indonesia, now exceeding 43,000 tonnes annually, spotlight a broader potato success story. Powered by vigorous domestic production, timely supply windows, and a compelling price advantage, Indian potatoes are well positioned to remain the preferred choice in Indonesia and wider Asia for years to come. This dynamic, data-driven trade relationship is a role model for Indian agricultural exports across the globe.
