According to Mr. Gaur, a crucial transformation is needed in UP’s potato farming landscape. Contract Farming Challenges
One of the significant challenges highlighted by Mr. Gaur is the current legal status of contract farming in Uttar Pradesh. With contract farming not being legal in the state, alternative approaches need to be developed to establish strong farmer-processor relationships. Despite this challenge, Mr. Gaur remains optimistic about changing circumstances that will eventually establish UP as a major processing hub.
Current Operations and Future Plans
Siddhivinayak Agri Processing is already actively working in Uttar Pradesh, focusing on growing specific varieties suited for processing. Mr. Gaur revealed plans to establish a processing unit in Farrukhabad, demonstrating the company’s commitment to the region. He particularly praised the UP government’s proactive approach and supportive policies towards potato farmers and the crop.
Innovative Varieties Meeting Market Demands
Mr. Gaur detailed the success of two particular varieties – Winner and Ganesh – which have gained significant traction across multiple states including Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh. These varieties have been specifically developed to meet the evolving needs of both farmers and processors.
In an exciting revelation, Mr. Gaur confirmed that Siddhivinayak Agri Processing is currently developing more than 22 new potato varieties specifically for the Indian market. This extensive breeding program demonstrates the company’s long-term commitment to revolutionizing India’s potato sector.
Government Support and Industry Outlook
A particularly positive aspect highlighted during the interview was the supportive role of the UP government in promoting potato cultivation and processing. This governmental backing, combined with the natural advantages of the region, positions Uttar Pradesh strongly for becoming a future hub of potato processing in India.
