The World Potato Congress Inc. recently concluded its Annual General Meeting for the 2024-25 year, a pivotal event that saw the organisation honouring the dedicated service of outgoing directors and international advisors, while also welcoming new executives into their roles. These changes mark a significant evolution for the WPC, setting the stage for future endeavours, including the 2026 Congress in Kenya.
Among the esteemed individuals concluding their terms is Jang Bahadur Sangha, a Director who joined the WPC as an International Advisor in 2017 before becoming a Director in 2018. Mr. Sangha has been a passionate representative from India, contributing invaluable expertise to the WPC’s mission. As Chairman of the Sangha Group of Companies in Punjab, Northern India, he oversees an enterprise with a 60-year legacy as India’s largest producer of seed and table potatoes. Under his leadership, the Sangha Group has revolutionised large-scale agricultural production in India and actively fostered the next generation of farmers. A Cornell University graduate with a Master’s in Fruit & Vegetable Science, Mr. Sangha’s influence extends to organisations such as the Australia India Institute and the Confederation of Potato Seed Farmers, and he has advised the Indian government on major agricultural policies as a former board member of Punjab Agricultural University. He was also awarded the Progressive Cold Chain Business Award in 2017 for excellence in Cold Chain. WPC President Peter VanderZaag lauded Mr. Sangha’s exceptional leadership and vision on various WPC Committees, noting that his perspective from India, the world’s second-largest potato-producing country, brought a fuller analysis to issues and aided in stronger policy decisions. The Sangha Group will continue its support as a Silver Sustaining Partner of the World Potato Congress.
The WPC also bids farewell to Nora Olsen, PhD, who retires from her position as Vice President and as a long-serving Director, having joined the Board in 2014. Dr. Olsen was instrumental in launching the WPC Webinar series, significantly enhancing global engagement and learning opportunities, and also chaired the WPC Governance Committee. Beyond the WPC, Dr. Olsen is a Professor and Potato Specialist at the University of Idaho, where she has contributed to her field for over 25 years. She holds a PhD and Master’s degree from Washington State University and made history as the first woman to serve on the WPC Executive and the first female President of the Potato Association of America. Peter VanderZaag highlighted her role in reshaping the fundamental aspects of the organisation, stating her enthusiasm and dedication will leave a lasting impact.
Additionally, Martin Acosta concludes his term as an International Advisor, a role he has held since 2022. As Founder and CEO of KIWA, Ecuador, he has been central to transforming Ecuador’s global snack industry. His brand, KIWA, champions native potato varieties, supporting local small producers and serving as an inspiration for biodiversity and sustainability. Martin holds an MBA from INSEAD, an MSc from the London School of Economics, and a BA from Kalamazoo College, and has actively participated in global development initiatives, including the United Nations Business Steering Committee.
In terms of new appointments, Greg Donald takes over as Vice President, replacing Nora Olsen. Previously the WPC Treasurer, Greg has been integral to the organisation since 2019 and brings over 30 years of potato industry experience from his role as General Manager of the PEI Potato Board since 2009. He holds a BSc in Agriculture from Dalhousie University and an MBA from the University of New Brunswick.
Assuming the role of Treasurer is Brian Douglas, succeeding Greg Donald. Mr. Douglas, formerly the General Manager of the WPC, has had an illustrious public service career spanning over 41 years. A University of Guelph graduate, he has held significant positions within the Government of Prince Edward Island, including Clerk of the Executive and Deputy Minister roles. He currently serves as Chairperson and Deputy Head of the Farm Products Council of Canada.
The World Potato Congress Inc. extended its sincere gratitude to all outgoing members for their unparalleled dedication and leadership and warmly welcomes its new executive team as planning for the 2026 Congress in Kenya unfolds.
