The potato market in Kannauj has witnessed a remarkable turnaround as early harvest potato prices reach Rs 1500 per packet in 2024, bringing much-needed relief to farmers after three years of declining prices. This significant price surge has created a wave of optimism among the farming community, marking a substantial recovery from the previous year’s low of Rs 350 per packet.
Production Boost Enhances Farmer Income
Along with rising prices, potato production has shown impressive growth. Farmers are now harvesting 20-25 packets per bigha, up from the initial yield of 10-15 packets of early harvest. This increased productivity has helped farmers recover their investments and secure better profits.

Market Dynamics and Distribution
The potato market in the district is witnessing heavy activity with hundreds of tractor-trolleys arriving daily. Loading operations continue late into the night as potatoes are transported to various states. The district’s potato cultivation spans approximately 56,000 hectares, with early table potato crop covering about 14,000 hectares.
Current market rates show white potatoes selling between Rs 750-1000, while red potatoes command Rs 1100-1250. According to potato trader Ashok Singh, the strong demand is expected to maintain stable prices. This marks a significant improvement from 2023’s disappointing rates of Rs 350-500 per packet and 2022’s range of Rs 500-600.
The positive market conditions have encouraged farmers to accelerate their raw crop harvesting. With sustained demand and favorable pricing, the potato farming community in Kannauj appears poised for a profitable season, breaking the cycle of losses experienced in recent years.
