In a momentous event marking the 1st International Day of Potato, a celebration was held on May 30, 2024, at KVK MEGAGRE in East Garo Hills, Meghalaya India. The event saw the enthusiastic participation of 25 potato farmers from the region, coming together to honor the versatile and nutritious potato.
Located in India in the northeastern state of Meghalaya, East Garo Hills is known for its agricultural richness and vibrant farming community. The celebration not only highlighted the significance of potatoes in the local agriculture sector but also served as a platform for farmers to exchange knowledge, techniques, and experiences related to potato cultivation.
Farmers in the region grow potatoes during the summer and spring, which are the main potato cultivation seasons in Meghalaya. Indigenous Nur Bun method of potato cultivation is prevalent in the area. Most of the potatoes available in Garo Hills are imported from the neighboring state of Assam, indicating the importance of potato as a newly introduced cash crop in the region.
