Potato Cultivation in Shahjahanpur: A Lucrative Venture

According to District Horticulture Officer Puneet Kumar Pathak, potatoes are one of the main crops in the region, with cultivation spanning across 15,000 hectares. The district boasts an impressive annual production of approximately 5.5 lakh tons of potatoes, with a storage capacity of 2.5 tons.

Why Potatoes?

Farmers in Shahjahanpur typically plant potatoes after harvesting rice. The potato crop has gained popularity due to its higher profitability compared to wheat. One of the key advantages is the short cultivation period, with the crop ready for harvest in just 80 to 90 days. Moreover, the market demand for potatoes remains consistently high, making it an attractive option for farmers.

Best Practices for Potato Cultivation

Mr. Pathak shared several crucial tips for farmers to maximize their potato yield and quality:

1. Field Preparation

• Perform deep plowing of the field before planting.
• Ensure the soil is loose and well-aerated.
• Mix 25 tons of well-rotted manure into the soil during the final plowing.
• Level the field to prevent water logging and ensure proper drainage.

2. Seed Treatment

• Treat seeds to prevent fungal diseases.
• Soak cut or whole potatoes in a solution of 0.02 grams of Mancozeb (75% WP) per liter of water for 10 minutes.
• Dry the treated seeds in shade before planting.

3. Fertilizer Application

• Apply 100-150 kg nitrogen, 45-60 kg phosphorus, and 100 kg potassium per hectare.
• Use half the amount as a basal dose and the remaining half 25-27 days after planting.

4. Weed Management

• Apply Pendimethalin immediately after planting.
• Use 500 ml to 1 liter of the herbicide solution to prevent weed growth.

5. Irrigation

• Utilize mini sprinklers instead of traditional irrigation methods.
• This approach conserves water and can increase yield by 10-15%.

6. Disease Management

• For blight control, spray a solution of 2 grams of Mancozeb (75% WP) per liter of water.
