The Indian potato market in July 2025 presents a contrasting picture compared to the previous year. While 2024 saw generally higher wholesale prices across most states, 2025 is experiencing a significant downturn, with prices substantially lower across the board. This shift is occurring amidst a renewed sense of optimism driven by the onset of monsoon rains, which has invigorated sales and cleared previous few months market sluggishness.

Current Potato Market Overview & Trends (July 2025)

The current sentiment in the Indian potato market is largely positive as compared to last few months, propelled by the much-anticipated monsoon rains. This atmospheric change has revitalized sales and brought a sense of relief to farmers and traders. As of late June 2025, national potato unloading figures are broadly consistent with the previous year. However, a notably larger balance stock remains, indicating a substantial carry-over. While sales are picking up, effective management of these reserves is crucial to prevent future price pressures.

Varied Regional Performance:

  • Gujarat: This state has seen a marked increase in potato sales.
  • Uttar Pradesh (U.P.): Cold storage shows a fair trend, and prices in Agra’s cold storages remain stable across various potato varieties. Farmers in other U.P. regions are reportedly receiving fair prices.
  • Bihar: The state has seen increased potato exports, and unloading from cold storages is stable.
  • West Bengal: This region continues to demonstrate robust export activity. Unloading figures from cold storages align with previous years, reflecting consistent market movement. Both industry associations reported similar percentages of stock unloaded by the end of June.
  • Delhi Market: Delhi’s Azadpur Mandi is experiencing higher arrivals. Prices for different varieties are stable and considered favorable.
  • Southern and Northeastern Markets: Southern Indian markets have seen a softening of prices due to increased potato arrivals. In Northeastern India, particularly Assam, prices for Bengal potatoes differ from U.P. varieties. Remote areas like Silchar have seen prices climb due to road blockades, highlighting logistical challenges.

Overall, potato prices have largely maintained stability or experienced minor downturns across markets. Since the beginning of July, a noticeable pressure on market prices has been observed in supply and sales centers. Despite this, the general consensus among traders is that a surge in market demand, could lead to a significant improvement in potato prices. The current positive influence of the monsoon offers an optimistic outlook for the potato sector, with the primary focus now shifting towards efficient stock management and leveraging evolving market dynamics for sustainable profitability.
