Wholesale potato prices across India have generally seen a decline in March 2025 compared to the previous year, according to data from various Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs). While consumers may welcome the lower prices, the trend could signal a shift in production or demand.
The most significant price drops were observed in states like West Bengal, which saw prices fall from 1333 Rupees/Quintal in March 2024 to 976 Rupees/Quintal in March 2025. Karnataka also experience a notable decrease, dropping from 1856 to 1489 Rupees/Quintal.
Haryana and Punjab reported the lowest wholesale prices, with Haryana at 588 Rupees/Quintal and Punjab at 608 Rupees/Quintal in March 2025. While the minimal increase has been reported at punjab. These states are amongst top 10 potato-producing regions, and the lower prices could indicate a good harvest season, potentially leading to an oversupply in the market.
Other major potato-producing states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Gujarat also witnessed price reductions. Uttar Pradesh prices fell from 1178 to 1032 Rupees/Quintal, Bihar from 1278 to 1164 Rupees/Quintal, and Gujarat from 1418 to 1166 Rupees/Quintal.
Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha and Rajasthan are no exception, with their prices decreasing to 989, 1407, 1484, and 966 Rupees/Quintal repectively.
