In the northern state of Uttarakhand, particularly in districts like Champawat, potatoes are a staple crop with abundant production. However, this year has seen a decrease in potato yield due to adverse weather conditions. Farmers in regions like Champawat, Lohaghat, and Pati engage in large-scale potato cultivation, contributing significantly to the state’s agricultural output.
Despite the challenges faced this season, potato farming remains a crucial aspect of Uttarakhand’s agricultural landscape. The recent fluctuations in potato prices in Champawat reflect the delicate balance between production, market demand, and environmental factors that impact farmers and consumers in the region.
In the district of Champawat, potatoes are abundantly grown. However, due to unfavorable weather conditions, the yield of potatoes has decreased this year. Consequently, the price of potatoes has increased significantly. In the past, potatoes were sold at a rate of Rs. 20 per kilogram, but now they are being sold at Rs. 30 to Rs. 35 per kilogram. Farmers mention that the yield of potatoes has reduced this season. Large-scale potato cultivation takes place in villages like Champawat, Lohaghat, and Pati in the district. This season, after planting potato seeds, there was a lack of rainfall, leading to crop failure. Farmers such as Navin Singh and Devan Singh report that the potato crop has been affected, with smaller-sized potatoes compared to previous years. The District Horticulture Officer, T.N. Pandey, states that around 700 quintals of potatoes have been distributed through active groups in the district. Additionally, farmers are purchasing potatoes from markets to continue cultivation. Despite a partial decrease in potato yield this season, recent rainfall may have provided some relief to the potato crop. The recent challenges faced by potato farmers in Champawat highlight the impact of weather conditions on agricultural production and prices in the region.
