Ms. Rajkumari Devi, known as the “Potato Queen” of Bihar, stands as a symbol of resilience, innovation, and empowerment in the agricultural landscape of India. As a farmer and agricultural entrepreneur, she has revolutionized the way potato business in Bihar is done by women, breaking barriers, and inspiring many along the way.
Ms. Devi’s journey was marked by challenges as she navigated the traditionally male-dominated potato farming sector. Undeterred by the obstacles, she blazed a trail by adopting cutting-edge agricultural practices such as utilizing high-quality fertilizers and potato seeds, setting new standards for farming excellence in Bihar. Her forward-thinking approach not only enhanced her own yields but also set a precedent for sustainable farming practices in the region not only for potatoes but for other crops too.
Recognizing the importance of uplifting rural women in agriculture, Ms. Devi founded the “Mahila Sabla Sangh,” a women’s self-help organization. This initiative aimed to empower and support women who aspire to venture into entrepreneurship, providing them with the tools, knowledge, and encouragement needed to succeed in the agricultural sector. Through this platform, she has catalysed a wave of female entrepreneurship, fostering economic independence and self-reliance among rural women.
In 2019, Ms. Rajkumari Devi was honoured with the prestigious Padma Shri award, one of India’s highest civilian honours. This accolade recognized her exceptional contributions to agriculture and her pioneering efforts in transforming the potato industry. Her relentless dedication and innovative spirit have not only earned her national acclaim but also positioned her as a role model for aspiring farmers, especially women, across the country.
