In a collaborative effort between the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture (ICAR-CITH) Srinagar, and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Gurez of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K), a Potato Seed Distribution program was organized at the Izmarg Station of SKUAST Kashmir on 7th June 2024.
The event, conducted under the Tribal Sub Plan, saw the participation of over 85 farmers and farm women from the Bagtore block of the Gurez valley in the Himalayan region. Farmers were educated on the significance of quality seed production and multiplication in potatoes during the program.
Dr. Bilal Ahmad Bhat, Head of KVK-Gurez, emphasized the importance of producing quality potato seeds suitable for the conditions in Gurez. Dr. Anil Sharma, Head of ICAR-CPRI-RS Jalandhar, familiarized farmers with the essential aspects of quality seed production of potato varieties developed by ICAR-CPRI.
Dr. Sajad-un Nabi, Scientist at ICAR-CITH, Srinagar, shed light on the crucial role of disease management in potato cultivation for ensuring quality seed production. He also discussed the significance of bio-control measures for disease management in potatoes and other crops grown in the organic Himalayan valley.
Towards the end of the program, high-quality potato seeds (Breeder Seed) were distributed to selected farmers for seed production purposes, along with tarpaulin sheets to support their agricultural activities. The initiative aimed to empower local farmers with the knowledge and resources needed to enhance potato cultivation in the region.
