The shipment, consisting of 38,000 sacks of potatoes, was transported via an Indian freight train comprising 42 wagons, which arrived at Benapole Rail Station around 9:30 PM on Tuesday. Deluxe International, a West Bengal-based exporter from Malda, facilitated this cross-border trade initiative.
According to Benapole land port’s Deputy Director Rashedul Sajib Nazir, the potatoes were procured at a rate of Tk 28.5 per kilogram. The authorities are working efficiently to expedite the release of the consignment, which will be distributed to various parts of Bangladesh, including major cities like Dhaka and Chattogram.
This import comes at a crucial time when local authorities have been taking strict action against price manipulation in essential commodities. The strategic movement of potatoes from Punjab to Bangladesh demonstrates the strengthening of agricultural trade relations between the two neighboring countries and showcases India’s role in supporting Bangladesh’s food security needs.
