Potato Processing Unit to Boost Farmers’ Income in Una
Agriculture Minister Chander Kumar has announced the establishment of a Rs 20 crore potato processing unit in the Una district. The minister made this significant announcement during the Himachal Day function held in Una. This initiative is aimed at providing better prices for the potato produce of the farmers in the region.
Speaking at the function, Minister Chander Kumar highlighted the extensive cultivation of potatoes in Una. He stated that the new processing plant would be instrumental in helping farmers realise more profitable returns on their harvest. The proposed unit is expected to produce a variety of potato-based products, including fingers, chips, and flakes.
The establishment of this processing unit aligns with the state government’s endeavour to increase the income of farmers and provide a significant boost to the rural economy. Minister Chander Kumar pointed out that a substantial portion of Una’s population, exceeding 70 per cent, relies on agriculture as their primary source of livelihood. This investment in potato processing is therefore expected to have a widespread positive impact on the local community.
The announcement of the potato processing unit in Una signifies a step towards agricultural diversification and value addition in the region. By enabling local processing of agricultural produce, the government aims to empower farmers, enhance their income stability, and strengthen the rural economic landscape of Una. This initiative, along with other supportive measures in the agriculture and dairy sectors, reflects a concerted effort to bolster the livelihoods of the predominantly agrarian population of Himachal Pradesh.
