State Overview

Understanding MP’s rapid rise as a potato production and processing force.

Madhya Pradesh has emerged as a significant force in India’s potato landscape, ranking 5th nationally with production of approximately 39.49 lakh tonnes from 1.53 lakh hectares (2023-24). The state’s contribution to national production has grown from under 4% in the early 2000s to nearly 6.9% today — an over 1,000% increase in production since the 1970s.

What sets MP apart is the Indore-Ujjain-Dewas belt — India’s fastest-growing potato processing corridor. Indore district alone contributes over 11.26 lakh tonnes from 44,170 hectares, making it the single most productive potato district outside the Indo-Gangetic plains. The Malwa Plateau’s black cotton soil and mild winter climate (15–25°C) create ideal growing conditions.

CPRI Regional Station Gwalior, established on 167 hectares, produces 5,000–6,000 quintals of breeder seed annually for MP, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and beyond. In 2023, RVSKVV Gwalior inaugurated an aeroponics facility funded by the MP Mandi Board (₹9.5 crore), with additional units in Indore and Sehore — positioning MP at India’s forefront of disease-free seed technology.

07

Challenges & Opportunities

Forces shaping MP’s potato future.

Challenge
Cold Storage Deficit
Unlike UP and West Bengal, MP has limited dedicated potato cold storage. Most facilities are multi-commodity, causing post-harvest losses exceeding 2 lakh tonnes annually.
Opportunity
Processing Unit Expansion
17.73 lakh tonnes surplus supports potato flour, frozen fries, starch, and dehydrated products — all underserved segments in Central India.
Challenge
Seed Quality & Supply
MP depends heavily on Punjab for certified seed. CPRI Gwalior’s breeder seed (5,000–6,000 q) is a fraction of the state’s total requirement.
Opportunity
Aeroponics & Seed Self-Sufficiency
RVSKVV’s aeroponics produces 50–100 mini-tubers/plant. Three facilities operational; Mandi Board scaling state-wide for seed independence.
Challenge
Small & Fragmented Holdings
Majority of potato growers are small/marginal farmers. FPOs, contract farming, and farm aggregation models need significant scaling.
Opportunity
Strategic Export Location
Central India position enables logistics access to Kandla and JNPT ports. Grading & MRL testing labs can unlock potato exports from the region.

09

Government Schemes

Policy support for MP’s potato production and processing ecosystem.

Cold Chain Scheme (MIDH)
Up to 35% capital subsidy on cold storage construction. Critical for MP’s post-harvest loss reduction and surplus management.
PM Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY)
Integrated cold chain and value addition infrastructure scheme — enabling potato flour, frozen fries, and starch units in MP.
MP Mandi Board — Aeroponics
₹9.5 Cr funded aeroponics for disease-free seed production at RVSKVV Gwalior, with satellite units in Indore and Sehore.
National Horticulture Mission
Subsidies for certified seed, tissue culture labs, drip irrigation for potato, and FPO formation across MP districts.
