In a recent development, the West Bengal government’s decision to halt potato trucks at the West Bengal-Odisha border has caused a stir in the state, leading to concerns among suppliers and cold storage owners regarding potential substantial losses.
Trucks laden with potatoes have been stranded at the border for over two days, with all vehicles instructed to return to Bengal by July 26. This action was purportedly taken by the Bengal government to address the soaring potato prices within the state. Prices at Koley market in Kolkata had escalated to ₹40 before the intervention. Following the restriction on out-of-state sales, the price reportedly dropped to ₹32.
The news of reduced potato prices brought relief to consumers in Kolkata, where potatoes hold a significant place in the daily diet of many households. A customer at Jadavpur Market, expressed contentment over the price dip, emphasizing the importance of affordability for larger families. However, he expressed hope for further reductions, citing an ideal price range of ₹20 at this time of the year.
Conversely, the ban on inter-state potato supply has been met with criticism from wholesalers and cold storage owners, who anticipate substantial financial setbacks due to the sudden halt in operations.Secretary of the Pragatishil Alu Byabsayee Samiti, questioned the rationale behind the supply restriction, highlighting the significant investment involved in each potato truck’s transportation. He emphasized the critical role of out-of-state sales in sustaining the potato industry and warned of dire consequences for suppliers and farmers if surplus produce cannot be distributed beyond Bengal.
Addressing concerns about potential losses, cold storage owners are highlighting the time-sensitive nature of potato storage, mentioning the risk of spoilage if the potatoes are not allowed to move to their intended destinations promptly. Ghosh also clarified that the potatoes supplied in Kolkata differ significantly from those in other states, minimizing the likelihood of a supply-demand clash.
Amidst these challenges, potato traders had previously initiated a strike in protest against the government’s restrictions but later called it off following discussions. West Bengal’s governemnt expressed readiness to engage further on the issue, underscoring the complexity of balancing local demand with broader supply considerations.
