Washington State has secured the title for the world’s highest potato yield per acre, as confirmed by the World Record Academy. With over 300 farmers cultivating potatoes in the region, the annual harvest in Washington boasts an impressive average of 30 tons per acre, doubling the national average and setting a new global benchmark.
The exceptional potato yields in Washington State can be attributed to a combination of favorable climatic conditions, nutrient-rich volcanic soil, ample water resources, and an extended growing season. These factors collectively contribute to the state’s ability to produce the highest potato yield per acre worldwide. Despite having a relatively modest number of commercial growers, the collaborative efforts of these farmers result in a substantial agricultural output, with a cumulative planting area exceeding 160,000 acres annually.
When compared to potato yields in other regions across the globe, Washington State boasts an average yield exceeding 70 tons per hectare.
Noteworthy achievements, such as triple-digit yields, have also been witnessed in the UK, with specific instances like the irrigation trial in 2013 yielding an impressive 125 tons per hectare using the Volare variety. However, experts highlight that such exceptional yields can sometimes come at the expense of dry matter content.
