In the Banaskantha district of Gujarat, potato prices have reached an unprecedented high, surpassing the Rs 500 mark per 20 kg. After facing a period of economic downturn and fluctuations, potato farmers in the region are experiencing a renewed sense of optimism. The district, known as the largest producer of potatoes in the state, is accompanied by significant potato cultivation in Sabarkantha, Aravalli, and parts of Gandhinagar district.
The surge in potato prices has brought joy to farmers and cold storage operators as the current market conditions reflect an upward trend. With prices exceeding 500 rupees per 20 kg, this significant increase is seen as a positive development for farmers who have previously faced challenges with production levels.
Particularly in Deesa, a town in Banaskantha known for its potatoes, farmers are delighted by the current potato prices ranging from Rs 500 to 550 per 20 kg. This price surge has set a new record, bringing a sense of happiness and optimism to the farming community in the region.
The rise in potato prices this year can be attributed to the cultivation during the Rabi season, leading to a spike in prices as production commenced. Factors such as lower potato planting in North India and increased demand have contributed to the current market dynamics, resulting in a supply-demand imbalance and subsequent price increase.
Comparing the recent prices to the past few years, there has been significant fluctuation. In 2020, potato prices ranged from 300 to 350 rupees per 20 kg, followed by a notable decrease in 2021 to Rs 150 to Rs 200 per 20 kg. However, in 2022, prices rebounded to the range of 300 to 350 rupees, providing relief to farmers.
The current year has seen a substantial increase in potato prices, nearly doubling compared to the previous year. This price surge is expected to incentivize farmers to engage in potato cultivation during the upcoming Rabi season, reflecting a positive outlook for the agricultural sector in the Banaskantha district of Gujarat.
