Recently, there have been reports of a rise in the cost of a vegetable thali (meal) in the country. Additionally, over the past 15 days, wholesale prices of onions have increased by up to 50%. According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs website, over the past year, prices of potatoes, onions, and tomatoes have seen an increase of up to 81% on average across the country.
Potato Prices:
– On April 30, 2023, the average price of potatoes was ₹18.88 per kilogram, which has now risen to ₹30.57 per kilogram by June 10, 2024. This signifies a 62% increase, equivalent to ₹11.69 per kilogram. In the month of June alone, there has been a rise of approximately ₹1 per kilogram in the average price of potatoes.
Onion Price Surge
– On April 30, 2023, the average price of onions stood at ₹20.41 per kilogram, which has surged to ₹33.98 by June 10. This marks a 66% increase over the past year, amounting to ₹13.57 per kilogram. In June alone, there has been an increase of ₹1.86 per kilogram in the average onion prices, with Delhi witnessing a rise of ₹12 per kilogram.
Tomato Price Hike
– The most significant increase has been observed in tomato prices compared to potatoes and onions. On April 30, 2023, tomato’s retail price was ₹20.55 per kilogram, which has now escalated to ₹37.11 as of June 10, 2024. This translates to an 81% increase over the past year, amounting to ₹16.56 per kilogram.
