In an effort to combat the rising prices of essential commodities, particularly potatoes, the Tripura government has taken proactive measures by introducing fair-price shops to provide relief to consumers. A senior government official in Tripura highlighted that consumers can now purchase potatoes at a subsidized rate of Rs 35 per kg from these designated fair-price shops.
On the 15th of July 2024, the government inaugurated four temporary fair-price shops in Agartala, along with a similar counter at the Maharajganj Bazaar in the state capital. This strategic initiative aims to mitigate the impact of soaring prices of potatoes, onions, and tomatoes that have burdened consumers in recent weeks.
The official emphasized that at these fair-price shops, a single kilogram of potatoes is priced at Rs 35, but a discounted rate of Rs 100 is offered for a purchase of three kilograms. These fair-price shops are intended to operate until the market conditions stabilize and the pricing situation improves, ensuring continued access to affordable produce for the general public.
Furthermore, the government expressed its intention to expand the network of fair-price shops across the region to extend the benefits to a larger consumer base. This initiative mirrors the establishment of similar fair-price shops last year in August, demonstrating the government’s commitment to alleviating the financial burden on consumers faced with significant price hikes in essential food items.
